Welcome!

With a population of 120 students in grades K-6, Pelham Elementary School provides a positive, safe, engaging, and supportive learning environment in which all students can grow and learn to become productive members of their community.  Pelham Elementary’s hard-working and passionate faculty and staff are focused on the development of each child and on helping every student achieve at their personal  best.  At Pelham, we celebrate the diversity of our learning community through our curriculum and our continual focus on social justice and culturally responsive practices.

Arts are an integral component of our program and include field trips, assemblies, and school events that enhance and foster awareness of various cultures and the arts.  Instrumental lessons, chorus, band and orchestra are offered to students in grades 3-6.  Pelham has a strong focus on learning from our environment, with a thriving, hands-on school garden curriculum and a naturalist-in-residence from the Hitchcock Center.  Pelham students also benefit from a strong core curriculum that is enhanced by classrooms that are equipped with the latest technology.

Pelham Elementary continues to rank as a high-performing school by state MCAS standards, which is achieved, not through teaching to the MCAS test, but through our focus on the specific learning needs of each student. The capacity of our staff to support students as individuals is ever-increasing and it has made a difference for all students. Our special education teachers are trained in the Orton-Gillingham reading multi-sensory approach, as well as in AVMR (Add +Vantage Math Recovery).  In addition, Pelham Elementary benefits from the proximity of the five colleges in the Amherst area in a variety of ways.  From professional development opportunities for our staff to direct student support through student interns, the five colleges are extraordinary partners in our work for children.

Finally, Pelham Elementary is fortunate to have a strong PTO that partners with us in a myriad of ways.  Through the generosity of the PTO, we are able to host annual events such as the multicultural potluck, the African American Read-In, Latino Heritage Read-In, Asian American Read-In and the Spring Fair.  This strong partnership reminds us that Pelham Elementary School is the heart of the Pelham Community!
