Kate Westafer in the ILC Classroom
Wildwood Elementary School educator Kate Westafer has been named the 2025 recipient of the Roger L. Wallace Excellence in Teaching Award, a distinction reserved for educators who exemplify instructional excellence, student-centered values, and a commitment to inclusive education.
As a special education teacher, Kate’s impact goes far beyond academic instruction. Her work is rooted in the intentional creation of community spaces where students learn, grow, and thrive together. “Intentional creation of community underscores my interest and approach to education,” said Westafer. “Most of my students are part of inclusive environments alongside same-aged peers. Although this is important, creating the ILC as a community intentionally built for and by our students, in every sense of the word, is one of the most rewarding aspects.”
The ILC, or Intensive Learning Center, is a program that Kate has helped shape into a vibrant learning space where difference is not only accepted but celebrated. “Within our spaces, students encounter social and academic peers, as well as peers who reflect their own communication and physical abilities,” she explained. “As valuable as it is for students to share experiences with those who learn, communicate, and move differently than they do, it is just as meaningful for them to connect with others who reflect their own lived experiences.”
Her teaching philosophy reflects the core values of the Amherst, Pelham, and Amherst-Pelham Regional School Districts, centered around equity, relationships, and lifelong learning. “Fostering these layered and responsive communities, tailored to meet each learner’s needs, helps create a true environment for learning and growth,” said Westafer. “From there, the actual ‘teaching’ part becomes simply a matter of details.”
Superintendent Dr. Xiomara Herman celebrated Westafer’s recognition: “Kate brings compassion and clarity to her classroom each day, ensuring that every learner is seen, supported, and challenged to grow. She is a powerful example of what it means to lead with heart, intellect, and unwavering commitment.”
The Roger L. Wallace Excellence in Teaching Award is given annually by the Amherst Education Foundation in memory of former principal Roger Wallace, honoring educators who model integrity, foster deep learning, and build strong, inclusive communities. Kate will be formally recognized at the district’s Opening Day Convocation this fall.
As Wildwood and the district prepare to launch a new school year, this celebration is also a reflection of what’s possible when educators build their classrooms with empathy, collaboration, and purpose. Her classroom is not just a space for instruction; it is a community where every student belongs.
