Beginning this spring, Amherst College student-athletes and Fort River Elementary School students, grades K-6, are teaming up as partners during recess. The partnership is intended to foster community connection and provide modeling for play.
Roughly thirty Amherst College student-athletes, representing a variety of sports, began their visits after winter break and will continue to visit weekly throughout the rest of the semester. The student-athletes represent women’s and men’s cross country, football, field hockey, women’s and men’s ice hockey, women’s and men’s lacrosse, women’s and men’s squash, women’s and men’s soccer, women’s and men’s track and field, and volleyball.
Early reports from the Amherst student-athletes and the Fort River students have been very positive, with the most excitement around playing football and soccer, swinging on the swings, and just enjoying spending time together.
