On Friday morning, the entire Fort River Elementary School community gathered in the gym for a vibrant and engaging cultural celebration, thanks to the thoughtful planning of kindergarten teacher Ann Shea. The highlight of the assembly was a performance by the UMass Lion Dance Team—a group that has become a beloved and growing tradition at Fort River.

The team dazzled students and staff alike with a colorful and energetic Lion Dance, complete with traditional costumes, rhythmic drumming, and expressive choreography. Students watched in awe as the dancers brought the lion to life, moving in coordinated, acrobatic motions that echoed centuries of Chinese tradition.

“We are thrilled to welcome the UMass Lion Dance Team to Fort River for a dynamic demonstration that celebrates tradition, artistry, and community. Opportunities like this remind us of the beauty of cultural exchange and the importance of honoring diverse histories in our schools,” said Dr. Xi, Superintendent of the Amherst School District.

Following the performance, students were invited to participate in a Q&A session, asking thoughtful questions about the origins and symbolism of the dance. The team shared insights into how the Lion Dance is used to bring good luck, drive away bad spirits, and celebrate major holidays such as the Lunar New Year.

Three lucky Fort River students even had the chance to try on the lion costume themselves, getting a hands-on feel for the artistry and athleticism the dance requires. The assembly ended with the team stepping out of costume to demonstrate some of the tricks and movements that go into their impressive performances.

Thanks to Ann Shea’s coordination and the generosity of the UMass Lion Dance Team, Fort River students were treated to a joyful, educational experience that deepened their understanding of global traditions and celebrated the beauty of cultural diversity.
