The Amherst-Pelham Regional Public School District is proud to celebrate Dr. Kerrita Mayfield, a recent recipient of the 2024 Kale Blazer Award from Massachusetts Farm to School. This esteemed award recognizes individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership and innovation in advancing farm-to-school initiatives throughout Massachusetts.
Dr. Mayfield, an Amherst Regional Middle School Science Teacher, is celebrated for her dynamic and creative teaching style, integrating storytelling, art, play, and social justice to cultivate an inclusive and engaging classroom environment. Her dedication to climate activism is exemplified by her creation of the interdisciplinary Climate Change Carnival, a biannual event that empowers seventh and eighth-grade students to explore the challenges of global climate disruption. The event includes student-led presentations, interactive workshops, and addresses from local and national speakers, fostering awareness and inspiring action.
The Kale Blazer Award celebrates Dr. Mayfield’s dedication to climate justice, her innovative teaching methods, and her contributions to farm-to-school education. Her leadership inspires students and colleagues alike, showcasing the transformative power of education in building a more sustainable and equitable future.
A colleague highlighted Dr. Mayfield’s unique ability to foster authentic and inclusive spaces. “Kerrita is committed to creating spaces in which one can show up in our fullness, our authentic selves, and bring forth our abundance of gifts and ways of being. She leans into the wisdom that exists within and amongst us to bring forth the collective agency and resilience that is needed,” they shared.
