For many years, students at Amherst Regional Middle School and Amherst Regional High School have participated in the National Latin Exam (NLE)—a tradition that reflects the district’s dedication to classical language studies and academic achievement. The NLE, which has been administered for nearly 50 years, challenges students nationwide to demonstrate their proficiency in Latin grammar, vocabulary, history, and culture.
Students in Amherst’s Latin program eagerly take on this challenge each year, motivated by their love for the language and the opportunity to showcase their knowledge. Their hard work consistently pays off, as Amherst-Pelham Regional Schools have maintained higher-than-average national scores for years. In 2024, approximately 70% of Amherst students scored above the national average, earning impressive distinctions that enhance their academic resumes and future opportunities.
Last year alone, Amherst students earned six gold medals, 12 silver medals, and 12 Magna cum Laude certificates—a testament to their dedication and the strength of the district’s Latin program. While this year’s results are still pending, the continued success of our students highlights the rigorous instruction and enthusiasm fostered in Latin classrooms across the middle and high school.
“I’m incredibly proud of our regional students for taking on the challenge of the National Latin Exam. Their dedication, perseverance, and intellectual curiosity embody the very essence of determination and grit. This exam is no small feat, and their willingness to push themselves reflects the strength and resilience we strive to cultivate in all our students,” said Superintendent Dr. Xi.
Beyond awards and accolades, the NLE serves as an important benchmark for Amherst-Pelham’s Latin program. It demonstrates the program’s academic excellence, strengthens college and job applications for students, and reinforces the value of Latin as a subject that connects language, history, and culture.
As the district eagerly awaits this year’s results, the achievements of past and present students continue to be a source of pride. The National Latin Exam is not just a test—it is a celebration of scholarship, perseverance, and a deep appreciation for the classics in Amherst-Pelham Regional Schools.
