Policy JICG: Tobacco Use

  The School Committee is committed to having a smoke and tobacco freeenvironment for all members of the school community; therefore, allforms of tobacco use are prohibited on all District property.
The useof any tobacco products by staff, students, and members of the publicis prohibited in all school buildings, on school grounds, and on schoolbuses.Use of tobacco products is also prohibited in all other vehiclesused in athletic events, field trips, club outings, etc. In addition,tobacco use by students is banned at all school-sponsored events, evenwhen this use does not take place on school grounds.

Student possession, use, or distribution of any tobacco products isprohibited. Students violating this policy will be subject todisciplinary procedures and will be provided with additional educationalmaterial and counseling. Programs for prevention, intervention, andreferral are encouraged, as are educational programs to supplement theDistrict’s health curriculum.

Students should be aware that the penalties for violation of thistobacco policy, as they affect athletic participation as mandated by theMassachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association, may be lengthierthan penalties imposed by the school.
